What to Do on the August Bank Holiday in Berkshire

August bank holiday is a great time to spend relaxing, switching off and generally enjoying the (hopefully) good British weather. This year, the bank holiday is the 29th of August, so if you’re in staying in Berkshire, check out some of the fun activities you can do over the bank holiday weekend!

Explore Biscuit Town 2022

Reading’s Biscuit Town 2022 heralds 200 years since the biscuit revolutionised Reading. Throughout the year, there’s a series of exhibitions and things to do, and the bank holiday weekend gives you the perfect opportunity to explore what’s going on.

There’s the MERL (Museum of English Rural Life) exhibition on Biscuit Town: 200 years of Huntley and Palmers in Reading, which includes a series of gems from over the years.

You can go on a walking tour covering the impact of Hunters and Palmers on the town with Terry, whose mother worked at Hunters and Palmers, or for something more self-service, check out the 25 minute audio trail which gives you a brief look at some of the biscuit history.

Or for the foodies, there’s an afternoon tea inspired by Hunters and Palmers biscuits at the Roseate hotel, which starts from £31.50 a person.

Paranormal Investigation: The Basics

Are you an adult who’s always wanted to investigate paranormal activity? Well, the Hellfire Caves offer the opportunity to spend an evening with the renowned Barri Gahi and his team, exploring the paranormal world of the Hellfire Caves. Just over the border into Buckinghamshire, the Hellfire Caves are in West Wycombe.

For 18 and overs only, this event runs from 7pm on the Friday to just after midnight on the Saturday. It’s a chance for you to spend an evening with the paranormal, and maybe you’ll come away with your own paranormal experience!

Abingdon Balloon & Fireworks Festival

Head to Abingdon on the night of Saturday the 27th for a fun-filled evening of hot air balloons and fireworks. There are helicopter rides, pyrotechnic shows, fairground rides, food and drink stands and so much more going on!

Abingdon was still Berkshire until 1974, so we’re counting it here!

Family tickets are £50 for two adults and two children, with lone adult tickets at £19 and child tickets at £9.50 in advance.

It is a late night, finishing at 11pm, but this means you get to see all the fireworks in their full glory. Last year was reportedly a fantastic event, so get yourself down for a great night!

Foodies Festival Oxford

While not strictly in Berkshire, Oxford is close to major towns, and the Foodies Festival looks to be a great event. Designed for music lovers and foodies alike, there’s celebrity chefs, bakers and sommeliers on hand to provide talks, plus Natalie Imbruglia, Toploader and The Feeling each headlining one of the three nights.

Foodies Festival tours the UK each year, and the Oxford event falls over the bank holiday weekend. Tickets start at £23 per adult for general admission for a day.
